A Look at ADD

Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, is a condition affecting about 7% of all children. Characterized by hyperactivity, difficulty concentrating, and impulsiveness and inability to pay attention, ADD can affect a child at home and at school, as well as in personal relationships with peers.

Today many medications can be offered to children with ADD, and a number of at-home remedies can also ease the symptoms associated with the condition.

What causes ADD?

Curiosity always makes us wonder. What causes ADD? It is understandable to ponder this question.

ADD is not a condition that scientists or doctors are sure what causes it to occur. It is believed that genetics play a role in ADD, and children who are exposed to certain types of chemicals are at a greater risk.

Who is affected by ADD? ADD affects children before the age of 12. Some children are not properly diagnosed, however, until their adulthood. As many as 70% of all children with ADD also experience the condition as an adult.

Signs and Symptoms of ADD

There are a number of signs and symptoms that you will notice in a child with ADD. Those signs and symptoms include;

  • Acts without thinking
  • Interrupts
  • Temper Tantrums
  • Making careless mistakes
  • Trouble organizing
  • Trouble focusing
  • Trouble paying attention
  • Easily distracted
  • Appears not to be listening when you are talking to them
  • Cannot remember things
  • Doesn’t follow instructions as given
  • Loses things or misplaces them
  • Fidgety
  • Climbs or runs when inappropriate to do so
  • Always on the go
  • Quick temper
  • Excessive talking
  • Cannot relax

If you suspect that your child has ADD, it is important that you see a pediatrician immediately. A number of treatment options can help control some of the behaviors associated with ADD If it is determined that this is the culprit of your child’s problems.

This includes medications such as Adderall and Concerta, and lifestyle changes.
