AfriOne launches Smartphone Assembly plant in Lagos

AfriOne has launched a mobile assembly in Lagos that is said to have the capacity of assembling about 300,000 products per month.

AfriOne is part of the conglomerate Contec Global Group that has been involved in a lot of advanced technological practice in Nigeria and Africa and a number of other countries, Contec Global is involved in developing Secure transaction processing software that uses Biometrics, smart cards and structured magnetics for secure transaction processing, they are also the brain behind the NowNowApp that helps you handle all your financial transactions quickly and securely through your smartphone.

Their foray into the mobile phone industry is also not unplanned, AfriOne the mobile phone development section of the conglomerate already has a tablet called AfriOne 2-in-1 in the market, although not made in Nigeria, it shows that the company already has enough experience to make its own product, in its own market and for its own market.

This makes AfriOne, without a doubt, the pioneer of high-end mobile communications technology in African thereby putting the company on the face of Africa and the world at large. Speaking at the event, the company’s CEO Sahir Berry posits that the factory was a technological breakthrough and precedent for the company and for Nigeria.

AfriOne also used this opportunity to launch its first made in Nigeria mobile phone called AfriOne Gravity Z1, the phone comes with a 3000mAh battery, 8 MP front camera and 5 MP rear camera, the phone has been launched into the market and is expected to be sold for close to 22,000 Naira in the smartphone market, the specifications although a bit scanty at the moment, has been highlighted in our article on the Gravity Z1 here.

The new facility spans 20,000 square feet including Research and Development (R&D) and testing laboratories according to Sandeep Natu, COO of AfriOne, the company presently employs approximately 500 workers at the product and testing facility. AfriOne, however, reiterates that despite the company’s growth their corporate social responsibility (CSR) will not suffer, beforehand the company already facilitates education and training programs and encourages entrepreneurship in Nigeria, Natu said this will continue because they recognise it as a means of contributing to national economic growth.
