On Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo pleaded guilty to tax fraud.
According to the Associated Press (via NBC News), the Juventus football club star received a two-year suspended jail sentence. According to the news outlet, a judge can suspend sentences for two years or less for first-time offenders according to Spanish law. This means the footballer wouldn’t be spending time behind bars.
Cristiano agreed to pay about $21.6 million (€19 million) in fines.
He appeared with his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez at Las Audiencia Provincial in Madrid Spain.
However, the charges date back to when Ronaldo was with his former club Real Madrid. A state prosecutor presented the charges in 2017, According to the AP (via NBC News), accusing Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud between 2011 to 2014.
He agreed in 2018, to plead guilty to tax fraud after initially denying accusations of hiding incomes made from his image rights.
The star athlete allegedly spent 45 minutes in the courtroom. He was dressed in all black and made no comments in regards to the court appearance or even his plea.
This, however, isn’t the only charge Cristiano is facing, as he has also been repeatedly accused of rape but equally denied all allegations.
It is unclear why Ronaldo keeps getting caught in webs like this, but what we know is that the footballer has the support of his fans and will draw strength from them to survive this trying times.
