Home Remedies for Dry Scalp

Dry Scalp

Do you have flakes dropping off your head and landing on your collar every time you comb your hair? that’s what happens when you have dry scalp.

There is an obvious feeling of confidence that comes with having clean and good looking hair on your head. Almost every person I know either spends a lot of time and money trying to get the perfect hair or constantly searches for new ways to maintain their hair.

Regardless of how much time and money you decide to invest in hair care, there is still a chance that you may have to deal with at least one out of the many hair problems on the planet.

To be honest, dry scalp is one of the most annoying things that can happen to your hair. I have heard someone say that only women experience dry and flaky scalp because we use different products on our hair. That, however, is nothing close to the truth. Men and young boys can also have dry and flaky scalp.

There’s hope for you if you have been embarrassed because of your dry scalp every time you visit a salon. But before I share with you a few home remedies for dry scalp, let’s take a quick look at the causes of dry scalp.

Causes of dry scalp

1. Using the wrong hair care product

If the hair care product you use hasn’t improved the condition of your scalp, then it just might be the cause of the dryness.

There are some hair products that cause irritation or inflammation, and that could cause your scalp to dry up and begin to shed flaky dead skin cells.

Also, ensure that the salon you patronize sticks to a particular product that is healthy, as using different products on your hair can cause dry scalp. If you have identified a product that works well with your hair, take it with you wherever you have to visit a salon.

2. Shampooing your hair too often

I understand that you need to keep your hair and scalp clean but you don’t have to overdo the cleaning. If you have a very oily scalp and also suffer from dandruff, it is best you opt for dry shampoo. Better yet, wash your hair only twice a month so it doesn’t dry up.

3. Naturally dry skin

If you have naturally dry skin, then you may have a dey scalp too. Also, during cold weather, your skin is likely to become even dryer. What you must do in such a situation is to ensure that your scalp is always moisturized and with a good hair oil too.

Even people with oily or combination skin experience some amount of dryness during winter and on cold days, so moisturizing should be a habit.

4. Not brushing your hair regularly

You probably never thought to ignore your hair for a long time and only brushing it when you have a date could hurt you. News flash! it can cause your scalp to become dry and flaky. Whenever you brush your hair, you increase blood circulation in your scalp and it’s a healthy practice.

5. Other causes

Medical conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and bacterial or fungal infections may lead to scalp dryness. If you think you’re dealing with any of these conditions, please see a doctor and get the right treatment.

Do not attempt to treat an infection on your scalp with a DIY trick unless you are sure it works.

Home remedies for dry scalp

Baking soda

If your dry scalp has caused your scalp to become flaky or gather up some dandruff, then it’s time to pick up that container of baking soda. You know how great baking soda works in the kitchen, but this substance has some hidden superpowers like the ability to work as a disinfectant.

Baking soda can get rid of any excess oils on your scalp, and it can also help to balance the pH level of your scalp. Baking soda is no doubt the best remedy for flaky scalp or dandruff that appears as a result of dry scalp.

To use baking soda as a shampoo, simply mix two tablespoons of your Bali soda with some water. Part your hair into four places spread your mixture on the hair and let sit for about 10mins. Thoroughly rinse off with warm water.

Banana and avocado

Avocados have healthy oils that work great in dry scalp and bananas are also very moisturizing. You can think of this as a smoothie for your hair just in case you’re not motivated to put food on your hair. Avocados contain a lot of antioxidants and bananas are wonderful hair conditioners.

A combination of these two fruits will not only keep your scalp moisturized, but your hair will also be thankful to you. To do this hair smoothie, you have to mash two bananas and one avocado pear till they form a paste.

Rub the delicious paste into your scalp and allow it to sit for at least 30mins before you rinse off with cold water. You have to do this every two days until you are satisfied with the result you get. Remember that you can eat the leftover so you have nothing to worry about.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil

A dry scalp needs to be moisturized and kept clean. Tea tree oil is my favorite essential oil because of its antioxidant quality and strong smell. Tea tree oil is used for many things, from skincare to hair care. This oil can heal skin problems, clean your skin, moisture, and even cure infections.

To use tea tree oil, mix three or four drops in some olive oil or vegetable oil then gently massage it into your scalp. Once that is done, get some warm water to rinse off the oil. Remember that tea tree oil has a strong smell, so you may have to use it only when you have no plans to go out, or before bedtime.

I hope these home remedies work well for you. I also think it’ll be a great idea for you to tell us about your results or leave other tips in the comments session.
