Do Millennials and Baby Boomers Differ When It Comes to Online Games?

Online Games

It does not matter which generations you are talking about, when a comparison is made between any two groups, you can be sure that there are going to be significant differences.

Not only differences in the way that they live their lives, but also in attitudes about life, love, and ways to entertain one’s self.

While there are significant differences between almost any generation, it would be easy to argue that the difference between millennials and boomers is greater than one would find in any other generational comparison.

This is especially true when it comes to online entertainment.

Both Generations Seem to Agree On Casinos

One area where both millennials and boomers are in agreement is with online casinos. No matter whether someone is 20 or 70, these are a popular destination for users, especially in an age where most can play these games on handheld devices.

Gambling has been part of our history for as long as we remember and most likely will continue to be one of the things most generation will show interest in. Typically, most people tend to find such casinos via websites which tailor the best options for specific countries.

Just as an example, since land-based casinos and gambling in general is prohibited by country law, most people tend to use online websites such as in order to find legal online casinos which accept Pakistani players.

Also, something we’ve noticed is that the younger generation is far more interested in using digital forms of currency.

The Games Are Different

In addition, the types of games that the two generations play are significantly different. The elder generation is far more likely to play traditional casino style games, games like blackjack, poker, and slot machines. These are games they have become accustomed to play and find greater enjoyment in play.

While millennials enjoy playing casino style games, they are far more likely to be playing video games, especially ones that offer simulated role-play options where they can work with others in the game. This allows them to form bonds with people from across the globe, and to create an extended friend base.

This attention to networking extends across social media platforms. Millennials not only want to increase the number of friends they have in their community, country, or even internationally, but they also want to share events that go on in their lives.

This can even be true when playing video games or playing online at a casino. Millennials are far more likely to share their victories and defeats than boomers.

This is a trend that is a major divide between the two generations, but that divide is decreasing. It has been noted that more boomers are interested in sharing their every thought and action than they were even two years ago.

This is one area where the two groups are becoming more alike with boomers seeking to become more like millennials.

Betting on Their “Team”

Boomers enjoy placing wagers on their favorite sporting events or sports team. In countries like Pakistan where cricket is the most popular sport, it is quite common for boomers to place bets on national and international games of interest.

While millennials have an interest in sports like football, they are turning to new forms of entertainment to place wagers such as eSports matches. These are videogame-based leagues where players compete from across the globe.

These leagues have major teams that compete from several nations, and there are huge tournaments that attract major international sponsors.

Most boomers ignore these leagues altogether or are ignorant to their existence. Not so for millennials. They enjoy watching, and really get involved in the action, as many participate in playing these games online.

Just as a young boy 50 years ago may have envisioned himself playing for the Pakistani national cricket team, now a 15-year-old boy may see himself playing on a team competing in DOTA.

Because of the socialization aspect of it, millennials are finding that they are drawn more toward eSports than they are to iGaming. In eSports, they are working together in a multiplayer scenario to complete quests, win battles, or play video sports.

iGaming often pits competitors against one another, removing the socialization that is so craved by this generation.

Amount of Time Online

A major difference between the two is the amount of time spent online. Because of social media, eSports and iGaming, and messaging apps, millennials are likely to spend as much as 25% of their day accessing the Internet in some form or another.

This number excludes texting or phone calls, which likely adds another 10% to 15% usage for some. It is remarkable to think that some in this generation spend nearly half their day using their phone in some capacity or another.

Boomers are not as attached at the hip on their phone or other electronic device. While the percentage of use is increasing from 2% to around 10% now, they are nowhere near the level of usage of that of millennials. This is especially true in the use of social media, where as much as 65% of boomers have never used social media at all.

The more amount of time spent online has also led to a decreased emphasis on protecting personal privacy. Millennials are prone to share almost every aspect of their lives, where boomers are far more concerned about protecting their privacy.

In Conclusion

It is easy to see why there is such a disparity between the two groups. Even when looking at a small sector of their daily lives, there is a significant difference in how they approach online games. This is a microcosm of their overall approach to life and provides a look to gain a better understanding of how the two generations differ.
