France 2-1 Australia

France benefitted from the world cup’s first video assisted penalty kick and a fortunate deflection off Aziz Behich to overcome the stubborn Socceroos. Les Bleus put up a below expectation performance against Australia and were lucky to have gotten off with a win. Antoine Griezmann scored from the spot after VAR confirmed he had been tripped by Josh Risdon before Mile Jedinak got Australia level with a spot-kick of their own in the 62nd minute. Paul Pogba secured the win for France ten minutes from time when his strike flew past Ryan after coming off Australia’s Behich.

Denmark 1-0 Peru

Yussuf Poulsen redeemed himself from the status of Villian to Hero in Denmark’s win against Peru. Firstly, the RB Leipzig forward was adjudged to have tripped Christian Cueva upon VAR review and looked on as the Peru man skied his penalty. Fast forward to the 59th minute, Poulsen was on hand to give Denmark the lead when played through by Christian Eriksen making no mistake with his finish. Peru tried but could not muster a comeback as Kasper Schmeichel in goal denied them any chance of doing so.

France 1-0 Peru

France carried their good fortune from the match against Australia to their secong game against Peru in Ekaterinburg Arena. Similar in circumstances to Paul pogba’s goal against Australia, the breakthrough for France came after an Olivier Giroud shot at goal took a deflection off Christian Ramos to fly over Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese allowing Kylian Mbappe the simple task of slotting home from close range. That goal made Kylian Mbappe France’s youngest goalscorer at a major international tournament as Hugo Lloris also earned the status of centurion having completed his 100th appearance in a France shirt.

Denmark 1-1 Australia

Yussuf Poulsen conceded his second penalty at the world cup after he was adjudged to have handled the ball upon VAR check and Mile Jedinak seized the opportunity to level the scores scoring his second penalty at the world cup. Denmark took the lead in Samara after Christian Eriksen capped a lovely passing move between himself and Nicolai Jorgensen with a superbly struck half-volley. With seven minutes left before the interval, Mile Jedinak stepped up to convert from the spot as both teams played a barren draw in the second-half.

Peru 2-0 Australia

Australia came into their final group game with a solitary point and hopes of qualification hanging on claiming a win and hoping France defeated Denmark by a fine margin. Eighteen minutes into the game, those hopes suffered a blow when Andre Carillo planted a sweetly struck volley into the back of the net off from a Paolo Guerrero cross sparking celebrations at the Peru end of supporters. Australia struggled to inspire a turnaround and five minutes into the second half veteran striker Paolo Guerrero who had been temporarily pardoned from a drug related ban scored to land a knockout blow on whatever was left of Australia’s chances of qualification.

France 0-0 Denmark

With France already in the next round and Denmark a leg in, a draw would have been in the best interest of both sides and so it ended. Both teams produced the first game to end goalless in Russia. In a game with chances few and far between, France coach Didier Deschamps rotated his squad with an eye on the knockout stages. After 90 minutes of action, the game ended in a draw with both sides sailing through to the knockout stages.
