Hosting A Backyard BBQ

Warm weather is on it’s way and now is great time to think about hosting a backyard BBQ. It’s a great way to reconnect and have some fun with friends and family. Invite your neighbors and make it an all out bash.

Start by pulling out the grill to make sure it’s in good working order. You may need a new one, so it’s better to find out now, not when you have a crowd of hungry guests.

Check that you have all the tools you’ll need, also. Tongs, spatula, and a basting brush are a must for the backyard chef. Don’t forget the apron; grilling can get messy.

Decide whether you will send invitations or just call everyone on the phone. Sometimes mailed invitations work out better, because people can tack them up so they remember the date. If your barbecue is a potluck you can add a request that people bring their favorite side-dish.

Keep the menu simple with the old favorites of hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steaks. Make sure you have enough charcoal or gas. Corral condiments on a tray, which will help make any drips easier to clean up.

Side dishes could include old favorites like potato salad, baked beans, pasta salad, fruit, and a veggie tray with ranch dip. Favorite desserts include cookies, cupcakes, watermelon, and apple pie. Who doesn’t love a watermelon seed spitting contest?

Have plenty of snacks for your guest to munch on throughout the day. Chips, pretzels, and trail mix are great choices. Bowls of salsa and dip will also be appreciated.

Have plenty of beverages available. Iced tea, lemonade, and soda can be placed on a separate table so they are easy to get to.

On the day of your get-together, mow the lawn, sweep off the deck, and remove any clutter. Provide as much seating as possible and throw blankets around on the ground for extra places for your guests to plop.

Toss a gingham table cloth over the picnic table and bring out the paper plates, napkins, and silverware. You may choose to go all out with decorations, or keep that simple too by simply stringing Christmas lights around the area.

You’ll probably want your favorite summertime music playing, but keep it at a reasonable decibel so people can hold a conversation without having to yell over it.

No barbecue is complete without games. They keep both kids and adults entertained and they’re just downright fun. There are tons of games you could play to get everyone involved and no doubt you have your favorite.

A few to consider are sack races, tag, baseball, croquet, horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, croquet, and Frisbee. For the younger ones provide sidewalk chalk, bubbles, jump ropes, or help them play a game of freeze tag.

Keep things simple so that you will have a chance to mingle and enjoy all the fun along with your guests.
