How to Create Custom Name Servers for Your Plesk Dedicated Server?

If you would like to manage the DNS for sites on your server through the DNS Management page in the Plesk Control Panel you will first need to set up custom name servers to assign to domains on your server. Having your own name server also gives you identity and a sense of uniqueness , also it’s a must have for those into small hosting business like sprout server a local hosting provider also part of the Krafty sprouts family.

Name Servers

This tutorial was setup using namecheap, if you use other registrar like godaddy please search for similar step.

Remember you need a default domain to use for the name servers, this might also be your hosting business domain or something else.

You will also need 2 IP address to make this work and you must configure the second IP with your server for this to work properly.

Create Custom Name Servers

  1. Go to your registrar and log in with your credentials for your Default Domains account. Steps provided are for namecheap
  2. from your list of domain, locate the domain you want to use and click on Manage
  3. switch to advance DNS take on your domain details page
  4. scroll down to PERSONAL DNS SERVER which is located at the bottom of the page
  5. Click on ADD NAMESERVER and options will be giving to you, I guess sticking with the default NS records or you can create your own
  6. Pick NS1 and add your IP then click on domain repeat it for NS2 as well, check the short video below. To modify simply click on the search button and the results will appear.

Part 2:

  1. Log in to the Plesk Control Panel.
  2. Under Server Management click Tools & Settings.
  3. On the Tools & Settings page under General Settings click DNS Template.
  4. Click the Add DNS Record Button.
  5. In the drop down menu next to Record type select A.
  6. In the Domain name field type NS1.
  7. In the IP address field type the IP address of your default domain.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Repeat Steps 4 – 8 for the Domain Name NS2
  3. Click the Add DNS Record Button
  4. In the drop down menu next to Record type select NS
  5. Leave the Domain name field blank
  6. In the Name server field type NS1.mydomain.com

  1. Click OK.
  2. Repeat steps 10-14 for NS2.mydomain.com.
  3. Remove the unneeded default NS record (<domain>.    NS    ns.<domain>.) By checking the box next to it and clicking the Remove button.
