Infinix Hot 2 – Africa’s Android One Review
Infinix made waves weeks/months back with #thehottestone trend on Facebook and Twitter. The hottest one we were expecting was not exactly the hottest one we got. Most people were expecting a killer droid device with 5.5″ display 2GB+ RAM and what have you, but instead, we got something else… Something somewhat better. We got Africa’s first Android One smartphone.

Android Ones are known to be be remarkably cheap, Google teamed and steady OS upgrade. Infinix hot 2 promises all that. The partnership with search giant Google, who recently re-branded to Alphabet, fulfilled the quest of most Nigerians and Africans – affordability, steady upgrades, and sleek device.
The new Android One, is a sequel to last year’s hottest selling smartphone Infinix hot, and thus the name Infinix hot 2, with model number x510.
The infinix hot 2 is a 5.0″ 720p device smartphone which the display is protected by corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 and has two variants. One is 1GB RAM device, the other a 2GB RAM device. Both devices still retain all other features, including the display and design.
The hot 2 as it’s fondly called isn’t your super slim device, but it’s fairly okay at about 7.8mm. The screen device features the operational buttons (icons) including the home, back, and menu keys. These buttons are usually placed on the panel of devices – a cue from it’s predecessor indicates this. Other noticeable features of the display include the front facing, selfie Camera which is placed at the top right hand side of the phone’s display. There’s also an LED notification light in view, as well as a speaker.
Software and general internals
Infinix Hot 2 is of course an Android powered device. The device runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS on boot, and as expect3ed from an Android One device, would be upgrade to to recently released Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Hot 2 features a quad-core CPU processor which is clocked at 1.3GHz on each core. The Lollipop OS on the hot 2 is expected to boost the device’s speed of handling tasks and afford it little or no lags in operations handling. Graphics on the device is handled by Mali-400-MP2.
The processor is utilized by 1GB/2GB RAM (depending on the variant) , while there’s 16GB ROM inbuilt which is expandable to up to 32GB via an external microSD memory card.
Camera, connectivity and battery
Infinix hot 2 – Android one features dual cameras. An 8MP camera on it’s rear as it’s main snapper. The rear snapper is accompanied by an LED flash light. The front however is adorned by a low 2MP selfie shooter. Both cameras are not the best at what they do, but then again, they perform okay tasks asked of them.
The hot 2 features dual SIM/ with dual standby, so there’s no need for swapping from microSD to nano SIM or something. Both sim slots allow for 2G (GSM) and 3G (HSPA) data access. You are not left in swapping between SIMs to use a fast internet access.
The battery on the Google partnered Android One – infinix hot 2 is a 2200mAh Li-ion battery. The battery is removable too which is a plus owing to the fact that the capacity isn’t what we hoped for.
- poor camera
- low capacity battery, knowing Africa (Nigeria) has an epileptic power supply
At it’s price, Infinix hot 2 x510 is unarguably the best budget smartphone in Nigeria and/or Africa at the moment. With the pecks of constant upgrades to the latest OS, there’s really nothing else to ask for from a less than 100USD device.
