Infographic: What Do You Do After You’ve Had Unprotected Sex?

Sometimes, unprotected sex happens. The condom might fall off or we might have just been too ‘in the moment’ and forgotten to use contraception. So, what happens after we’ve had unprotected sex & how do we stay safe?

The following infographic from Lloyd’s Pharmacy looks at the warning signs that both guys and girls should look out for after unprotected sex. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s very important to go and get checked out by the GP – it might be nothing, and let’s hope it is, but it’s better to be given the all clear.

One recommended option for dealing with the aftermath of unprotected sex is the emergency coil which can be fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex. This is the most effective form of emergency contraception out there at the moment.

It is also reported that 1 in 10 women aged 20-29 will take the ‘morning after’ pill. Depending on the type, this can be effective for 3-5 days after unprotected sex, but it is best to speak to your doctor about your options.

Let’s talk sex stats – 26% of people don’t routinely have safe sex with new sexual partners… which is pretty alarming, so you need to make sure that if you’re included in that statistic, then you are taking the right precautions afterwards. Also, according to the infographic, 51% of female & 61% of male university students surveyed have admitted to having unprotected sex.

Condoms can be picked up for free at any local GP or sexual health clinic so there is really no excuse to run out. Make sure the condoms have the CE mark on them and are in date, and you’re good to go.

It is important to always practice safe sex but sometimes, it does happen so we should all be prepared and know what to do just in case. It’s always good to know.
