Origin Story: Part 1 of How Marvel Cast Your Favourite Superheros

0

You have seen on your TV screen time and again the most powerful superhero of the Marvel cinematic universe; the person we’re talking about is Sara Finn. What exactly is her superpower? The ability to cast the juggernaut franchise’s stacked up line of talented heroes.

In the ten years since the release of iron man marvel cinematic universe has proven to us repeatedly that they know just how to pick the perfect actors to portray their wonderful line up of heroes, starting with Robert Downey Jr and recently continuing with stars such as Chadwick Boseman, Brie Larson, and tom holland.

The debut of Larson as Carol Danvers in captain marvel is the Marvel cinematic universe’s first official female-led movie. A long time coming for this franchise that has been able to deliver 21 great films in its early three phases, and this is just their latest stroke of perfect casting as Larson who is an Oscar winner has become a real-life hero to many people. Thanks to her struggle for female representation in Hollywood both in front of the camera and behind the camera while promoting this blockbuster movie.

On the set of the captain marvel movie Larson once explained to E! News during an interview that “I know my limitations—I know that I’m just one white girl—and I’m just trying to do as much as my strength can allow within the framework of my body. As I’ve grown, I’ve noticed these movies the Marvel movies, in particular, have so much meaning in them. They mean so much!. You can have a great time and enjoy it for having a great time, but you can equally be left with really deep philosophical questions. That combo is really wonderful. So, the idea that we could actually make something that was thought-provoking and entertaining, that was going to be seen all over the world? It’s a crazy one…The opportunity came, and I felt like, ‘I gotta take the call the same way [Carol] had to make the call.”

In between tony stark’s being the genesis and Larson being the most recent in the Marvel cinematic universe, there have been so many actors who have joined marvel over the last decade. Some of these wonderful actors were already big deals before they landed their respective roles as superheroes in marvel while some others were struggling as hard as they could to get in the doors of auditions before the finally got a role that would make them one of the most famous people in the movie industry.

Every superhero that ever existed has their personal story, and each story is unique and worth telling.

As we gear up to see captain marvel’s big release and also prepare for the Avengers: endgame which is set to bring 10 years of excellent storytelling to an end and also mark the beginning of the franchise’s next phase on the 26th of April, we have decided to reveal each of Marvel’s biggest stars origin story. This will include how they a and who else was up to take the role, with personal quotes from the superheroes themselves, and also talk about the man who assembled the Avengers marvels president kevin Feige.

Iron man/Tony Stark

Iron man

The man who was the beginning of the entire story is basically the least person marvel would have considered playing the role of tony stark. Today, when you talk about tony stark, the only picture that comes to mind is that of Robert Downey Jr as this character has been tied to him forever.

Jon Favreau who is a movie director fought tooth and nail to land Robert Downey jJrthe role of tony stark regardless of his troubled past that included rehab and prison.

During an interview with the USA today Jon explained as he drew a comparison between the actor and the character Tony Stark: “We did not want to just go with a safe choice. The best and worst moments of Robert’s life have been in the public eye. He had to find an inner balance to overcome obstacles that went far beyond his career. That’s Tony Stark,” Jon state. Adding that “Robert brings a depth that goes beyond a comic book character having trouble in high school, or can’t get the girl.”

Robert, on the other hand, did everything possible not to disappoint as he took the role quite seriously. He offered notes and repeatedly requested multiple takes to get a scene right. robert said  “I’m more diligent than I used to be. I want to show Jon he was right to have so much faith in me. Whatever questions might have arisen about my life were no issues with him.”

Casting Robert Downey Jr for the role of tony stark is one risk that paid off big time and also delivered the world’s biggest and most successful franchise ever. This role launched Robert Downey Jr from being an actor nobody wanted to become one of hollywood’s most sought-after and highest paid actors (you can call this the ultimate come back if you want that’s exactly what it is).

In a Talk with the Toronto sun, Kevin Feige gushed “He’s an unparalleled talent. He’s a totally amazing actor. He has an amazing personality, and an amazing persona that we thought could be tapped into amazingly. We knew he was a great actor and we knew he was unbelievably charismatic, and he’d be able to bring Tony Stark to life in an unbelievable and very realistic way. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the MCU would not exist without Robert Downey Jr.”

Even though Robert Downey Jr was kevin’s first and only choice to play the role of iron man, there were a couple of other actors who were considered for the role. Timothy Olyphant, Cliff Owen, and Sammy Rockwell would have been in the position of Tony today, but none of them made it to become Iron man. However, Sam Rockwell ended up being cast as one of the primary villains in iron man 2.

Captain America/ Steve Roger

Captain America

A lot of us were surprised when Evan, who was 29 at the time, and was famous for the fantastic less-than-amazing fantastic four movies, was named by Marvel as their perfect actor for the 2011 captain America the first avenger. some people would like to think that he was an easy choice to make but the fact remains that choosing him was by far nothing close to an easy process.

Feige recalled during a talk with vanity Fair that “Casting Captain America was super difficult. I started to think, ‘Are we never going to be able to find Captain America, and if we can’t, what are we going to do with Avengers? Is the whole thing going to fall apart? And, then, finally opening ourselves up to Chris Evans, who we had initially sort of just looked past because he was Johnny Storm in a Fantastic Four franchise. Then, bringing him in and showing him the artwork, showing him what was happening in this movie, and he took a weekend to decide.” Feige continued saying “I go back to Chris Reeve as Superman as the gold standard, and I think Evans is right there. I couldn’t imagine anybody else.”

Evan on the other hand has also admitted to being quite hesitant to take on the role of Captain America he said he actually had to turn down the road a few times before taking on the courage to signing on it. Chris Evan told Jimmy Kimmel that he was scared and explained how he had a daunting number of movies he had been signing on for and also his social anxiety with the movie industry.

Regardless of all the factors that made him turn the offer down before when he finally came on the movie he delivered the role in the most amazing way possible. The Captain America star said all the times he said no to the role was as a result of fear “You can’t do anything at all out of fear. You can’t be doing something because you’re scared of doing it. It ended up kind of clicking to me in the way that whatever you’re scared of, push yourself into it.”

People who almost became captain America

A couple of big names in the movie industry allegedly audition for the role of captain America including Garrett Hedlund, Channing Tatum, Chace Crawford, Scott Porter, and Dane Cook.
The popular comedian joked on MTV in 2010 about how he was actually going to meet in on Captain America which to him was kind of cool. He even added that after superman captain America was his next Favourite superhero. Knowing that superman is a superhero from a rival company is possibly one reason why he didn’t make the role for captain america.

And then there is John Krasinski who even went as far as telling the story of how he made it far enough during the casting process to try on the captain america suit. John reported that in his head he was sure he had gotten the role and it was quite a big deal for him. However, he got the disappointing call on his wife’s birthday that the road has been given to someone else, but he was man enough to accept the news in good faith.

Captain Marvel/ Carol Danvers

Captain Marvel

I have noticed one tiny thing with a lot of superheroes. and that is they are usually scared of taking on such powerful roles and it is no different in the case of brie Larson. the oscar-winning actress for her breakout performance in the movie “room,” reported that she was unsure if it was a right decision to take on such an iconic role, especially since it has been taste as the most powerful superhero in the entire Marvel cinematic universe.

The beautiful actress explain the network with the Hollywood reporter that “I was hesitant even to meet. I was like, ‘I don’t think what comes with a movie like that is anything that I can harness and hold. I’m too much of an introvert. I’ll just collapse. But then they started talking to me about this film, and I was like, ‘Drat, this is the culmination of a lot of things I’ve wanted.'”

For Mr Feige, on the other hand, the 29 year old actress was the most appropriate option. “With Captain Marvel, who has super powers that approach a height that we haven’t seen before in our movies, you need to counter-balance that by finding a person who is also very human and very relatable and can get into a groove with the audience, where they’re eager to see her fly through the sun and punch a moon away from a spacecraft,” Feige told Variety magazine. “At the same time, we need her to land and have relatable flaws. Brie is a person you’re going to want to go on this journey with.”

Marvel had lost out on the chance to cast the Mary Poppins return’s star in two previous roles, but this time they reportedly approached the actress about finally joining their superhero ranks to play the role of captain marvel. When Screen crush asked about the rumors, Blunt told them that “I think, it’s always has been for me always about—and now, more so—what am I putting out there? What would be interesting for me and what would be interesting for people to see. So, if it’s an awesome part, it doesn’t matter if it’s a Marvel movie or a tiny movie, I’d be up for it.”

Other stars who reportedly tried to get the role of Captain America include Katheryn Winnick and Yvonne Strahovski

Black Panther/T’CHALLA

Black Panther

In what seems to be one of the easiest casting choices that Marvel ever made Feige revealed that Chadwick Boseman was quite easy to choose as the future king of Wakanda. During a press conference in 2018 for Black panther, Feige said “We were sitting around a table. We were coming up with the story for [Captain America] Civil War [when] Nate Moore, our executive producer, suggested bringing in Black Panther because we were looking for a third party that wouldn’t necessarily side with Cap or Iron Man. And almost instantly we all said ‘Chadwick’. And in my memory, though maybe it was the next day, we got him on speaker phone right then.”

There obviously was no need to host an audition, and there also was no major negotiation all they had to do was put a phone call through to Chadwick who at the time was in Zurich promoting the movie Get On Top. The producer said, “You hear people say this all the time when you’re in a setting like this, but he was the only choice.”

The entire universe will agree that choosing Chadwick for the role of Blackpanther was the best choice ever as black panther becomes the first superhero movie to ever land a best motion picture nomination at the Oscars not only that it won three awards at the Oscars of 2019 which makes it the first Marvel movie to win an academy award. One other wonderful thing? it has become the highest grossing movie of all time.

Thor

Thor

Chris Hemsworth landed the role of Thor who we know as the sexy Nordic god. But guess who would have become Thor instead of Chris? his younger brother Liam Hemsworth.

“I had a very early audition early on in the process, didn’t go very well. My little brother had an audition; he almost got the part,” Chris Hemsworth once shared on Quora. “Then didn’t ‘cause they said he’s a bit young, so they opened the casting back up.”

The Thor star further said, “I was really angry that my kid brother almost got the part, so I came back in with a newfound fury. And actually had to call Liam and say, ‘How was the audition? Give me a few tips,’ and he did, thankfully, and I got the part. So it was a very collaborative family event, that one. Motivated by a little brotherly rivalry!”

If Liam Hemsworth should be happy about losing any role, then it would be the role of Thor as it opened up an opportunity for him to audition for the movie titled the last song which introduced him to his new wife miley Cyrus.
