Pope Francis Says “No Place for Gay Men in Clergy”

Pope Francis has recently been quoted to have said “there is no place” in the priesthood for gay people and that he is seriously worried about issues of homosexuality.

Different Italian news outlets have been recently published excerpts from an interview between Spanish Missionary Fernando Prado and Pope Francis. The four hours interview is soon to be released in a book titled The strength of vocation. Consecrated life today.

The yet to be published book discusses various issues regarding serving as a clergy in the Catholic Church, as well as what kind of people are fit to serve in the clergy.

On the 29th of November, the Catholic newspaper Avvenire published the entire excerpt in which Fernando asked the Pope specifically to address the issue of inclusion when it comes to “people with homosexual tendencies.”

Pope Francis answered by first admitting that the subject is “something that worries me, because perhaps at some point it has not been dealt with well.” He then went further to describe gayism as “a grave matter, which must be discerned adequately from the beginning” with individuals who decide to become members of the clergy.

Pope Francis mentioned that “We must be demanding. In our societies, it even seems that homosexuality is fashionable and this mentality, in some way, also affects the life of the Church.”

It has become evident that the Pope holds firmly to the traditional Catholic teachings on homosexuality. These traditional teachings which remain the official teachings reject the concept of Homosexuality and tag it as “intrinsically disordered” and an “objective disorder.”

Despite the Pope’s reputation as a progressive force within the Catholic Church, has voiced his support for the embrace of Catholics that are LGBT+ previously, Pope Francis made sure to uphold his teachings in his interview with Fernando.

Pope Francis who recently suggested that parents take their LGBT+ kids to see a psychiatrist for help, mentioned that the existence of homosexual priests is an issue that he has talked about with some other members of the clergy.

The Pope recalled that one religious leader had mentioned to him that there were “good young students and even some already professed clergymen”  who has admitted to being gay in his congregation. “He himself had doubts about the thing and asked me if there was anything wrong with this,” the Pope recalled, adding that the unnamed religious leader suggested that perhaps homosexuality is not a serious issue and that it was ultimately just “an expression of affection.”

However, the pontiff disagreed with such an idea, telling his interviewer that the religious leader was making a mistake. “It is not just an expression of affection. In the consecrated life and the priestly life there is no place for this kind of affection,” the Pope said, adding that: “For this reason, the Church recommends that people with this rooted tendency are not accepted in the ministry or in the consecrated life. The ministry or the consecrated life is not their places.”

Pope Francis has also previously an opposition to homosexual men joining the during closed-door remarks to the Italian Bishops’ Conference which was quoted in CNN. It was reported that the pontiff allegedly said: “If in doubt, better not let them enter.”
