Qualcomm and MediaTek’s subsidiary Goodix Technology are expected to dominate the sales and supply of Under display fingerprint sensors in 2019.
According to Digitimes “the all-screen design of smartphones has fueled the adoption of fingerprint sensors for new-generation smartphones to be launched in 2019, driving IC design houses in greater China, including Taiwan’s Egis Technology, FocalTech, Elan Microelectronics and Novatek Microelectronics as well as China’s Goodix and Silead to develop such sensors to meet the increasing market demand.
“Of them, Goodix has joined Qualcomm to secure a preemptive presence in the sector, as it has landed orders for optical fingerprint sensors from China smartphone vendors and Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo, with shipments to kick off in the first half of 2019.
“Also, Qualcomm has won orders for its next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensors from Samsung to support the latter’s new midrange and high-end Galaxy models for 2019, and shipments are expected to set off in late 2018 or early 2019.”
This also reveals Samsung devices coming in 2019 will use Indisplay / Underdisplay fingerprint sensors. The need for this under display scanners may be part of the indisplay-everything trend where smartphone markers tend to put almost every phone feature (speaker, camera, sensors) under the screen as they race to develop the 100% screen to body ratio smartphone.
