Sony Xperia XZ1 Review

Sony Xperia XZ1

Software

The Sony Xperia XZ1 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, offering the latest in terms of software features and mobile applications.

Design & Display

The Sony Xperia XZ1 has a 5.2-inch display with a Full HD (1920 * 1080) pixel resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The technology behind the display is Sony’s HDR Triluminous and X-reality tech which combines to give you fully clear picture representation of objects on the screen, making it look just like what you would see on a 4K TV.

The design of the Xperia XZ1 is similar to that of the general Xperia X family of smartphones. The smartphone has slim side bezels and large top and bottom bezels.  Its fingeprint sensor is baked into its power button which is present on its right side together with the volume rockers and a hardware button that is designated to control the camera.

It has its speaker on its bottom bezel at the front and its earpiece is present on top of the brand name on the top bezel, together with its front camera.

Like most phones from Sony, the Xperia XZ1 possesses IP65 and IP68 certifications for water resistance, meaning you can dip it in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes safely.

Memory & Performance

Powering the next flagship smartphone from Sony is the equally flagship octa-core Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform processor working together with an Adreno 540 GPU.

The processor has 4GB of RAM to operate and the user has 64GB of internal memory to store files, which if not enough can be expanded up to 256GB using an external microSD card.

Camera

Quite uncommon, a 19MP camera whic uses an Exmor RS sensor with a size of 1/2.3″ and has a f./2.0 aperture, 5-axis stabilisation, 4K video recording, 960fps slow-motion video and Predictive capture is  present at the rear with a LED flash to take care of main photography on the phone.

The Xperia XZ1 sports a 13MP camera upfront with a 1/3″ Exmor RS sensor, 22mm wide-angle lens with f/2.0 aperture and 1080p video recording to take care of selfie photography.

Battery

For a phone this packed with features, you would expect nothing less than a super battery capacity in order to allow the user enjoy its immersive features for longer. However, at the time this post was written, the battery capacity of the Xperia XZ1 could not be ascertained.

Connectivity & Hardware

The Sony Xperia XZ1 comes with a hybrid dual SIM slot which leaves you having to choose between using a Nano SIM and microSD for storage expansion, and using two Nano SIM cards. Fortunately, the phone supports 4G with Voice-over-LTE functionality.

In terms of hardware, Sony’s DSEE HX, LDAC and Digital Noise Cancelling audio technologies are at work in the XZ1 to give you a fulfilling audio experience.
