Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi MIX together with its flagship Mi Note 2 last year, and the phone was a surprise to the general tech ecosystem, as no rumours or teasers were heard of it prior to its launch. The Mi MIX dazzled us with its conceptual bezel-less design which saw it do away with 99% of the top and side bezels, leaving only the bottom bezels to give the smartphone a reasonable grip in the hands.
Since then, many OEMs have launched their own versions of the Mi MIX, and the latest is the UMIDIGI Crystal which was launched only last week. The Crystal bears a striking resemblance to the Mi MIX, but its selling point is its $99 pre-sale price which is sure to attract buyers in their millions around the world.
In this article, we put the UMIDIGI Crystal versus Xiaomi Mi MIX, examining their similarities and differences and picking out which one is better between them, and if the UMIDIGI Crystal is a worthy successor to the Mi MIX at its price level.
UMIDIGI Crystal versus Xiaomi Mi MIX – Similarities
In the memory section, the UMIDIGI Crystal has a variant with 4GB of RAM and another with 6GB of RAM, and the Xiaomi MI MIX also has a variant with 4GB of RAM and another with 6GB of RAM. Like the Crystal, the Mi MIX has a variant with 128GB of internal storage, and both can be expanded with external microSD cards.
Another thing that the Crystal and Mi MIX have in common is the front camera; they both sport 5MP cameras at the front which are both placed beneath the display and are thereby invisible to the eyes.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX ran on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 layered on top of it, but it has since then received an update to the latest version of Android, Android 7.0 Nougat. As for the UMIDIGI Crystal, it runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
In terms of connectivity, both smartphones come with dual Nano SIM slots and support 4G LTE networks. They also possess fingerprint sensors for security vetting.

UMIDIGI Crystal versus Xiaomi Mi MIX – Differences
Firstly, the Xiaomi Mi MIX is a phablet with a 6.4-inch display, while the UMIDIGI crystal comes standard with a 5.5-inch display size. The Mi MIX has superior display quality with a Full HD (2040 * 1080) pixel resolution, while the Crystal doesn’t do too bad with a Full HD (1920 * 1080) resolution.
The 6GB RAM variant of the Mi MIX comes with 256GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 256GB, while the 6GB variant of the Crystal comes with 128GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 128GB.
Under the hood, the highest variant of the UMIDIGI Crystal, the Lumia Edition is powered by the flagship Snapdragon 835 processor which is the best smartphone processor for now, as long as non-Apple smartphones are concerned. This clearly surpasses the Mi MIX which is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor which was the latest at the time it was released.
Graphics would, however, be rendered better on the Mi MIX as it uses an Adreno 530 GPU, compared to the Crystal’s Mali-T720 MP2 GPU.
At the rear, the Mi MIX sports a 16MP camera with a dual-tone LED flash and 4k video recording, while the UMIDIGI Crystal offers a 13MP camera with autofocus and a dual LED flash at the rear. The Mi MIX is superior to the Crystal in this aspect.

Overall, the Xaiomi Mi MIX has a better and more durable build and design than the UMIDIGI Crystal and would appeal more to the high-end category of smartphone users, but price is the major determinant for many an intending smartphone buyer, so the UMIDIGI Crystal would win many hearts over with its combo of impressive specs and low $99 price tag.
