Sara Ramirez has been quiet about her sexuality for a long time, but after the shooting at Orlando’s plus nightclub and subsequent violence against LGBT and Queer people, the actress found it in her to come out openly about her bisexual and queer status. The former Grey’s Anatomy actress shared with EW that “An organic, incremental urgency to use my platform to empower those who are part of these communities that I’m a part of came over me in a way that I’ve never felt before.” The 42-years-old actress said that coming out gave her a “sense of relief.”
Sara said, “It’s been a form of liberation for me to own all of my identities so that I no longer feel the need to hold back or hide any parts of myself when I walk through any threshold in life.”
The actress said that she had decided to share her story with people at home during a movie night, and she was shocked at their reaction. “Everyone was very supportive and happy for me,” Sara said, adding, “The reaction went something like, ‘Huh? Cool. Can we get back to the movie now?’”
The actress said jokingly that she had blocked out four hours for the talk about her admission, but it appeared unnecessary because nobody made a big deal about it. Since she came out, she has been happier and feels more confident.
