Xiaomi Moves Closer to Unveiling Its First Ever Rugged Smartphone

Despite the fact that whenever top Chinese smartphone manufacturers are mentioned, you dare not leave out the brand Xiaomi, the company doesn’t have a rugged device (with an IP certification) to its name. Well, that’s about to change soon.

New details springing up reveals that Xiaomi has been busy in the design room and factory as it prepares to release it first ever rugged smartphone that will come with waterproof, dustproof and shock resistant abilities.

Xiaomi Mi 7

Back in 2016, explaining why Xiaomi do not produce rugged phones or phones with waterproof features, President and Founder of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, explained that the production of rugged smartphones will lead to the increase in the cost of Xiaomi phones to the tune of 20 to 30 percent. Also, the waterproof feature of such devices could deteriorate as the device age or when some components of the device are compromised.

With this new development, things have clearly changed. Xiaomi will be having a rugged smartphone with waterproof feature early next year and if you understood the previous paragraph, you’d get one crystal hint – the upcoming rugged Xiaomi device will be pricey.

The rugged device is said to be the Xiaomi Mi 7 and will be IP68 certified. Alongside this, the device is rumoured to have a full view display of about 6 inches in size. Furthermore, the Xiaomi Mi 7 is most likely carry the Snapdragon 845 chipset (which will be launch by Qualcomm in Hawaii by December 2017) under the hood.

Truth be told, if the Mi 7 comes with the above speculated features, I am very positive the device will be widely embraced and accepted irrespective of if it comes with an expensive price tag. It definitely will be worth its money.

Lastly, the device will be covered in glass material which will enable it support wireless charging. There is no details about the battery capacity but the wireless charging feature is exciting and would make the device outstanding, just like the Doogee S60 rugged smartphone.

What do you think? Will you shell out 20-30% more cash for a rugged phone from Xiaomi?
