Johann Rupert Early Life

Johann Rupert was born on June 1,1950, to Huberte and Anton Rupert in Stellenbosch. He studied economics and company law in the university of Stellenbosch.

He later received an honorary doctorate award in 2004 from Stellenbosch University in 2004. He was also awarded an honorary award in commerce, in 2008 from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Johann Rupert usually withdraws himself from public attention, events and interviews which made Barron’s and Financial Times to describe him as “reclusive”.

Johann Rupert Career Johann Rupert worked as an apprentice for Chase Manhattan in New York for two years and also for Lazard Freres for three years before returning home in 1979 to establish his company Rand Merchant Bank.

In 1984, Rand Merchant Bank was later merged with Rand Consolidated Investments to form Rand Merchant Band Holdings. There after, Johann Rupert left to join his father’s company, the Rembrandt Group.

In 1988,Compagnie Financiere Richemont was established. Johann Rupert served as the Non-executive director of Rothman International Plc in that same year and also received an accolade for the “best businessman”. The following year, Johann Rupert was appointed the vice Chairman of the Rembrandt Group which is father Anton Rupert was the CEO.

In 1990,Johann Rupert was named the business leader of the year by Cape Town chamber of Commerce and Die Burger newspaper. Also Vendome Luxury Group South Africa which is a subsidiary of Richemont was formed.

In 1991 the business mogul was also appointed chairman of Rembrandt Group Limited. In 1997 Johann Rupert got an appointment to serve as the Non-Executive Chairman of Gold Fields South Africa Ltd.

Johann Rupert reformed Remgro Limited, Rembrandt Group Limited, and Venfin Limited in 2000. He also became the CEO and chairman of Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA that same year. Apart from business, Johann Rupert has passion for sports.

He is a former cricketer and in 1990 Johann Rupert established the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Worthy of note is the fact that 65 projects globally are being funded by Laureus sports, with the aim of tackling social issues using sport, having a particular emphasis on less privileged children.

He teemed up with his friends Morne du Plessis and Tim Noakes to establish the Sports Science Institute. Johann Rupert developed Leopard Creek Golf Club in Mpumalanga, one of South Africa’s top three golf courses which was designed by his friend Gary Player, and was rated number 25 outside united states of America.

He also featured in the yearly Gary Player Invitational golf tournament in order to help Gary player raise funds for various children’s charities. He serves as Chairman of the South African PGA Tour and Chairman of the South African Golf Development Board.

In 2007 he was elected into South African Sports Hall of Fame and in 2009 was inducted into South African Golf Hall of Fame. Johann Rupert took over his brother Anthonij’s L’Ormarins wine estate after his (Anthonij) demise in 2001.

He headed Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons. He was council member of The South Africa Foundation and trustee of the Southern African Nature Foundation, The Institute of Directors in Southern Africa, Business South Africa and Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns and Managing Trustee and member of the investment committee, Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

In 1993, Johann Rupert received the M.S. Louw Award from the A.H.I. (“Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut”). In 1999, Rupert got the Free Market Award, which was given to him by The Market Foundation of South Africa. Johann Rupert also got the Honorary Doctorate award in Economics by Stellenbosch University.
