John Obi Mikel is a well known defensive midfielder who is currently a free agent and also an ex Nigerian international.

His most notable time in football was when he represented Chelsea football club for a Chinese super league club.

Mikel has a unique playing style on the football pitch with his commanding presence at the middle of the park. This prompted a lot of clubs to fight for his signature when he was still quite young and playing for the Norwegian club, Lyn.

He is seen as a Nigerian legend and also he is one of the best players that Nigeria has ever produced.

In a career that started out in Lyn, he was a star on his way up from the onset and it was very hard to notice. Mikel put his name on the map of top European football clubs through his mesmerizing display in midfield during the U17 world cup in Finland.

After the tournament, he was signed by Lyn. Mikel whose original name was Michael had his name mistakenly registered as Mikel. Though he had a choice to change it, he let it be because he felt the name had a nice ring to it.

He then went on to represent Nigeria in the 2005 world Youth championship and was awarded the silver ball at the end of the tournament.

The summer after that, Mikel was signed by Chelsea but not without a lot of dispute between Chelsea, Manchester united and Lyn. The case was settled financially and OBI was able to join Chelsea for a final fee of £16 million.

Mikel’s first season at Chelsea was not so successful and was a minimal success but during his subsequent seasons at the club, he had a lot of playing time due to injuries to Michael Essien and the transfer of Makelele away from the club.

Despite a few tough time at the club including being a bench warmer and being charged for drunk driving, he was successful at the end of his time at the club. He won two premier league titles at thee club, one UEFA Champions league title, 3 FA cups, one league cup and the Europa league title.

Mikel then left Chelsea for the Chinese super league team, Tianjin TEDA on a free transfer in January, 2017 and left 2 years later without any significant achievement at the club.
Mikel then moved back to English premier league team, Middlesbrough who were then in the Championship in 2018.

At the end of the season, he was released by the club and then he moved to the Turkish Super league team, Trabzonspor on a two year contract. He however could not finish his contract with the club due to disagreement with the club over coronavirus issues.

Mikel was then released by the club and has since then been a free agent till date. His national team portfolio is also a rich one as he won individual awards and the African nations cup in 2013. You can agree with me that he had such a wonderful career.
