Rihanna’s Biography
Rihanna was born on 20th February 1988 in St. Michael Parish on the Caribbean island of Barbados to Ronald and Monica Fenty.
Her mother, Monica, is from Guyanese and was an accountant, and her father Ronald Fenty, from Barbadian, and was a warehouse supervisor. Rihanna is the eldest of three children.
Growing up with her parents in Barbados, Rihanna’s childhood wasn’t such a pleasant one as it was tainted by her father’s struggle with addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol, coupled with her parent’s marital problems.
She was just 14 when her parents separated. She struggled with crippling headaches for several years in her childhood and attempted to hide her condition from people around her so that they would not think she was abnormal.
As a young girl, she turned to music to help her escape from all the drama caused by her parents. She listened to Caribbean music, like reggae, as well as American hip-hop and R&B. She enjoyed singing and, at some point, created a trio group with two of her friends in school.
Together, they scored an audition with an American record producer Evan Rodgers, who was visiting the island with his Barbadian wife. However, Evan found Rihanna’s beauty and talents worth taking to the next level and decided to take her to the U.S.
He helped her record a demo, which helped her secure an audition with the rapper Jay-Z, who was head of Def Jam record label at that time. Jay-Z signed the budding vocalist into the label, and for her professional career, she adopted her middle name, Rihanna.
Music career
Just Eight months after she was signed to Def Jam, Rihanna released her first single “Pon d replay,” a reggae-influenced club hit song that reached the Number 2 spot on the U.S. Billboard charts. Rihanna immediately captured an international audience and was announced as the next up-and-coming pop star.
The success of the song made sales for her debut album, Music of the Sun was released in 2005, which conventional R&B ballads shared space with Caribbean-flavoured dance-pop that showcased her melodious Barbadian lilt.
It reached No. 10 on the Billboard albums chart and also featured the single “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want.” The album went platinum despite poor reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, who deemed it “lacking ingenuity and rhythm.”
Rihanna soon followed with the release of her second album, A Girl like Me (2006). This album, however, fared better with critics. It features two major hits “Unfaithful” and “S.O.S.” The up-tempo club hit song “S.O.S” became Rihanna’s first song to top the Billboard singles chart. It was later reported that she had found text messages from another girl on Chris’s phone and after repeatedly taunting him on the subject, which resulted in a heavy argument which left Rihanna assaulted, to the point of almost losing consciousness.

Rihanna launched her own line, Fenty Beauty, in 2017. The brand was exuberantly embraced by fans and was praised for its inclusive nature in offering 40 different shades of foundation.
By 2019 it was announced that Rihanna was partnering with LVMH Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton to create the fashion line Fenty. She thereby became the first black woman to head a fashion house at LVMH, the largest luxury-products company in the world. Fenty’s first collection was released later in 2019.
Philanthropic work
Rihanna is eager to put her fame and fortune to good use, as she is involved in many charity ventures. She founded The Believe Foundation in 2006 to help terminally ill children, she also joined H&M for their Fashion Against AIDS campaign and was the face of the Gucci UNICEF campaign.
In 2012, Rihanna also launched the nonprofit Clara Lionel Foundation, after her grandmother.
