Your refrigerator, the dishwasher, the cooker, and even the microwave depends on power to function.

However, are you aware that you can still save some of the energy you burn and even have your next door neighbour use the energy too? Well, it is not rocket science.

1. Stop overfilling your dishwasher

If you would like to save more than 30% of your electricity bills, then you can just go ahead and wash your dishes with your hands.

Doing the dishes on your own is actually a form of exercise, and it is very healthy for you.

If you’re one of those lazy people who find it difficult to do their dishes by themselves, then you can wash them immediately after every meal instead of piling up.

However, if you must use dishwashers make sure that it is full before you turn it on but do not make it too full that you find it difficult to shut the door.

You may also notice that some of the dishes will not be thoroughly washed and then you have to re-watch them, which would mean wasting more time and energy.

And don’t be tempted to consider unwrapping new dishes and discarding the already used ones; it is a terrible idea, and it does not help you save money in any way.

2. Opt for smaller appliances

You can cook with your oven whenever you have something big to prepare, but if that is not the case, there are many other appliances that you can use instead that will help you save some kind of energy. A toaster, a slow cooker, or even a microwave are better options if you must save energy.

Not only the disappearances consume less energy they also do not cause your home to heat up as an oven would do.

If you’re considering purchasing any of these appliances ensure that you go for models that come with energy level labels, this will make your oven the last option and will help you save some money from your bill.

3. Treat your fridge right

A lot of us make the mistake of putting hot food right from the port into the refrigerator, but this is wrong if you really want to save energy. Putting hot food into your fridge will make it work harder to cool down the food.

After you must have dished the part of the food you were eating, allow the rest cool down before you store them in your refrigerator.

Also, make sure you do not leave the doors of your refrigerator open for a long. Ensure that you leave at least a 10 cm space between the back of the fridge and the wall behind it.

4. Choose your burner carefully

You may have noticed that your burners come in different sizes. Even though this may be insignificant to you, it is designed that way for a reason.

Because your cooking pans come in different sizes, it would only be logical that your burner is of a size that is proportional to the size of your pan.

If you have a large burner and small pans, then you should make sure that you always lower the flame so that it does not escape; that way, you’ll be saving energy.

5. Stop over-filling your kettle

The energy you would be wasting if you allow your kettle continues to boil too much water every month is sometimes enough to power some of the gadgets in your home for an entire day.

It is better that you cook sizable amount of water two times than forcing all of it to boil at once. There is a huge chance that you might not make use of all the water you are boiling at a time, and you might just end up boiling the water again if you did not finish it. That would mean more electricity will be wasted.

6. Control your serving portions

Have you ever noticed that whenever you chop your vegetables into smaller pieces, they cook faster than when they are cut into big chunks? This method of cooking is very convenient especially when your family is very hungry.

Not only will your dinner be cooked in a very short period, but you will also have been able to cut the burning time which is good. If you cook things like this for an entire month, you will end up saving enough energy that will serve you for up to an additional week.

7. Always Turn off your appliances at the plug

Your kitchen appliances such as your dishwasher microwave and even your washing machine shed some kind of electricity when they are left on standby.

Whenever you’re not making use of your appliances, it is better that you turn them off at the power plug. It is, however said that this cannot be done for your refrigerator.
