Hugh Michael Jackman was born on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. His parents Christopher John Jackman and Grace McNeil, were English and had moved to Australia in 1967. Hugh Jackman holds Australian and British citizenship.

Early Life

Hugh has four older siblings from the same parents. His parents got divorced when he was eight years old. He remained in Australia with his father and two older brothers while his mother got remarried and moved back to England with his two sisters. Hugh also has a younger half-sister from his mother’s remarriage.

Hugh attended Knox Grammar School in Sydney and went to England for a year after graduating high school. On his return to Australia, Hugh took a course in communications at the University of Technology, Sydney, and graduated with a BA in Communications in 1991.

During his time at the university, Hugh had the opportunity to take a drama course which he enjoyed and later decided to enroll in a one-year course at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney.

He transitioned to stage musicals in 1996 and was involved in productions such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sunset Boulevard.” Other projects featuring his appearance at that time include “Erskineville Kings” and “Paperback Hero” in 1999. He also featured in television shows like “Law of the Land” and “Blue Heelers.”

Hugh first gained recognition outside Australia when he starred in the 1998 production of “Oklahoma!” at the Royal National Theatres in London’s West End. His outstanding performance in London earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical at the 1999 Olivier Awards.

Hugh experienced a breakthrough in his career when he starred as Wolverine in the Marvel superhero film “X-Men” in 2000. He performed alongside Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden.

Hugh Jackman got married to actress Deborra-Lee Furness in April 1996; they met on the set of the television show “Correlli.” The couple adopted their children Oscar Maximillian and Ava Eliot after Deborra suffered two miscarriages

The family lives in Melbourne, Australia. Hugh suffered a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma, but he was able to overcome it.

Philanthropic work

Hugh serves as a global advisor for the Global Poverty Project, and also supports The Art of Elysium as well as the MPTV Fund Foundation.

Hugh and his wife are also patrons of the Bone Marrow Institute in Australia. He is also a World Vision ambassador.
